My Daughter was born January 5 th 1970, and on January 4th at 11 p.m. I was waiting patiently for this new singer to perform on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. He was the latest musical sensation. His music defied description, quirky, folksy, hip, and yet to me cutting edge. I had not seen him and yet I listened for everything he would do. Well at the point Johnny Carson said “Bill Withers after these commercials”. My Wife simultaneously said” It’s time,It’s time in a rather hurried manner. It was the moment of decision,”how far are the contractions apart”. She retorted “Less than 2 minutes apart. Dog gone it.”
I missed that show, however, I did get one of the most wonderful daughters in the world that day. But my love of Bill Withers” music was in it’s infancy as well, and it is coming close to another of my daughter’s birthdays, and another year of my musical devotion to Bill Withers” music. My Brother (Eric “Mouse”Johnson had an opportunity to work with him many years ago and said that, that folksy cool manner is real.
I don’ t think there are many story tellers that entrap your heart like Bill did with “Ain’t No Sunshine When She”s Gone.” The lyrics seem to flow from his lips and heart. His Grandma’s Hand” Made You think of that bond between grandmother and grand child. “Who is He and What is He To You”. was the song that showed a vulnerability and strength that men rarely admit. “Just the Two Of Us” was almost an anthem to musicians, it incorporated everything good in music. The solo was like a cameo in a movie it’s poetic lyrics were the crowning touch. Yes I’m happy about that daughter, but Bill Withers’ music has bought joy to my life as well.
Bill and My Daughter Still Bring Joy To My Life.
